Any fly pattern can be used with your tenkara fly fishing rod, including dries, nymphs, streamers, terrestrials, etc., but tenkara traditionalists focus less on hatch/insect visual imitation and more on fly movement and presentation. Thats why a simply hackle-forward fly patterned called the Sakasa Kebari is often the go-to tenkara fly pattern. It doesnt resemble any particular insect but, with the hackle facing towards the hooks eye, under water it pulses and is an effective attractor.

A Beginner's Guide to Tying Tenkara Flies

This is the only tenkara fly used by Mr. Katsutoshi Amano, a name readily recognized by tenkara practitioners in Japan. Like most tenkara masters in Japan, Mr. Amano sticks with one fly pattern, and his entire box is filled with the same exact fly - same size, same color. This tenkara fly comes alive when underwater, especially if pulsated. Mr. Amano's favorite way to fish it is to cast slightly upstream and do a 4-count up and down motion following the fly downstream.
